- [On-Offline International Academic Conference] "Seongho Yi Ik's New Compilation of the Four-Seven Debate"
- One of the representative debates in Korean Confucianism, the Four-Seven Debate, has been a significant issue in Korean Neo-Confucian philosophy since the 16th century. Seongho Yi Ik (星湖 李瀷, 1681~1763), a pioneer of Korean practical learning in response to the most prominent issue in Korean Neo-Confucianism, had his own perspectives on this matter. In pursuit of the global spread of Korean philosophy, KAEP of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture, in collaboration with the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy and 3T R&E Project Group based on Confcuian, Eastern and Korean Philosophy, BK21 4th, will be hosting the international academic conference "Seongho Yi Ik's New Compilation of the Four-Seven Debate" from January 8 to 10, 2024. The focus of this conference will be Yi Ik's work, 'New Compilation of the Four-Seven Debate (四七新編),' which examines his views on the Four-Seven Debate. Thirteen experts in Korean Neo-Confucian philosophy from Korea, the United States, Canada, China, and Taiwan will present and engage in discussions during the conference. Please refer to the attached poster for the specific schedule of the conference. The international academic conference will take place both online and offline at the 2nd-floor Live Virtual Studio of the Business Hall at Sungkyunkwan University and on Zoom. It will commence at 10:30 AM on January 8, 2024, and conclude at 12:00 PM on January 10, 2024. - [Colloquium] "On Critical solidarity: Being a Woman of Color Philosopher in the United States"
- The global spread of Korean philosophy and building bridges are the most important visions of K-Academic Expansion Project. On November 15th, we will host a colloquium featuring Professor Boram Jeong from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Colorado Denver, titled "On Critical Solidarity: Being a Woman of Color Philosopher in the United States." As the title suggests, in this colloquium, Professor Jeong aims to share her experiences and alternatives as a philosopher studying in the United States and simultaneously as a woman and a researcher of Color. While philosophy pursues universality, philosophers all conduct their research under unique situations and contexts. The reality of philosophical research encounters many differences. Professor Jeong’s presentation is scheduled for November 15, 2023, at 4:00 PM in Room 31310 on the 3rd floor of the Toegye Hall of Humanities at Sungkyunkwan University. We hope for the participation of many interested individuals.

- [Offline International Workshop] "Neo-Daoism in China and Korea: Weijin Xuanxue and Korean Syncretic Daoism"
- In the realm of Eastern philosophy, three primary branches are commonly recognized: Confucianism (儒), Buddhism (佛), and Daoism (道). However, it's evident that in the context of Korean philosophy, the emphasis on Daoism is significantly less pronounced compared to the other two branches. How can we delve into the world of Daoism in Korean philosophy? K-Academic Expansion Project, committed to the global spread of Korean philosophy, has been actively tracing the influences of Daoism in Korea in collaboration with 3T R&E Project Group based on Confucian, Eastern, and Korean Philosophy, BK21 4th, Sungkyunkwan University. At the international workshop held in March 2023, titled "2023 Zhuangzi beyond the Inner Chapters in Seoul," we explored the impact of Zhuangzi's philosophy on the thought of the Goryeo Dynasty scholar Yi Gyubo during the "Reading Zhuangzi through Yi Gyubo" session. On November 17th, we are organizing another international workshop titled "Neo-Daoism in China and Korea: Weijin Xuanxue and Korean Syncretic Daoism." This workshop will comprise two sessions. In the morning, after a presentation by Professor Sojeong Park, our center's director, graduate students from College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy, including Jeongin Lee, Yeongchae Yoon, William Gilbert, and Sejin Oh, will shed light on various aspects of Yi Gyubo's work. In the afternoon, Professor Alan K.L. Chan from the University of Hong Kong and Professor Brook A. Ziporyn from the University of Chicago will deliver lectures on the topics "What is Neo-Daoism?" and "Why Read Non-Sagely Philosophers? - Guo Xiang on What the Zhuangzi is Good For," respectively. This international workshop will be conducted both in-person at Sungkyunkwan University's Business Building, 2nd floor Live Virtual Studio, and virtually via Zoom. It is set to commence at 9:40 AM on November 17, 2023, and is expected to conclude at 5:45 PM. (Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4863783858) For more detailed information, you can visit the dedicated website created for this international workshop: https://kphiloskku.weebly.com/ We eagerly encourage the active participation of those who are interested. - The 3rd ISEAP Conference “Following the Brush: Defining Aesthetics Through East Asian Philosophy”
- The International Society of East Asian Philosophy held its third conference on September 15 and 16. The international conference was entitled: Following The Brush: Defining Aesthetics Through East Asian Philosophy. On the second day of the conference, Professor So Jeong Park, who heads the K-Academic Expansion Project (KAEP) and serves as the Director of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture (IKPC), gave a keynote speech entitled: “Acceptance of “Aesthetics” in East Asia and Its Philosophical Prospects”. In sum, Professor Park’s speech explored the strong affinity East Asian intellectuals have for "aesthetics" as a field of study. Unlike its limited role in Western philosophy, aesthetics has been enthusiastically embraced in East Asia, with some universities in Japan and Korea maintaining dedicated departments for it. This affinity is rooted in the harmonious blend of rationality and sensibility in East Asian philosophy, offering a response to Western modern philosophy's challenges. Professor Park also called for a reevaluation of East Asian aesthetic concepts beyond Western frameworks and conducted a comparative analysis of conceptual metaphors in Western and East Asian art discussions, demonstrating the persistence of East Asian aesthetic ideals into the modern era. Professor Park also used Contemporary Korean art examples to illustrate how East Asian aesthetic principles continue to influence today's artistic expressions.
