In the realm of Eastern philosophy, three primary branches are commonly recognized: Confucianism (儒), Buddhism (佛), and Daoism (道). However, it's evident that in the context of Korean philosophy, the emphasis on Daoism is significantly less pronounced compared to the other two branches. How can we delve into the world of Daoism in Korean philosophy?
K-Academic Expansion Project, committed to the global spread of Korean philosophy, has been actively tracing the influences of Daoism in Korea in collaboration with 3T R&E Project Group based on Confucian, Eastern, and Korean Philosophy, BK21 4th, Sungkyunkwan University. At the international workshop held in March 2023, titled "2023 Zhuangzi beyond the Inner Chapters in Seoul," we explored the impact of Zhuangzi's philosophy on the thought of the Goryeo Dynasty scholar Yi Gyubo during the "Reading Zhuangzi through Yi Gyubo" session.
On November 17th, we are organizing another international workshop titled "Neo-Daoism in China and Korea: Weijin Xuanxue and Korean Syncretic Daoism." This workshop will comprise two sessions. In the morning, after a presentation by Professor Sojeong Park, our center's director, graduate students from College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy, including Jeongin Lee, Yeongchae Yoon, William Gilbert, and Sejin Oh, will shed light on various aspects of Yi Gyubo's work. In the afternoon, Professor Alan K.L. Chan from the University of Hong Kong and Professor Brook A. Ziporyn from the University of Chicago will deliver lectures on the topics "What is Neo-Daoism?" and "Why Read Non-Sagely Philosophers? - Guo Xiang on What the Zhuangzi is Good For," respectively.
This international workshop will be conducted both in-person at Sungkyunkwan University's Business Building, 2nd floor Live Virtual Studio, and virtually via Zoom. It is set to commence at 9:40 AM on November 17, 2023, and is expected to conclude at 5:45 PM.
