Summary

Before imperialist forces swirled in Asia in the mid to late 19th century, the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan began to emphasize reality and practicality in common in the mid to late 18th century, showing signs of political and ideological change. In particular, in the 18th century, Joseon began to develop a series of reasons to resolve contradictions and conflicts derived from the Neo-Confucianism system that lasted more than 300 years. These realistic and practical reasons are called 'practical studies'. The exploration of "silhak," which has been developed through continuous exchanges with China and Japan since the 18th century, is a very important foundation for measuring the scalability of Korean philosophy. This course will explore the overall occurrence and development of Joseon Silhak, not just person-centered, in depth along the historical context, and examine the political and cultural exchanges with China and Japan, looking at the prospects of "Korea" and "East Asia" in the 21st century.
