Professor PARK, So Jeong, who is leading the K-Academic Expansion Project (KAEP), and the Director of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture (IKPC) participates in the second panel “Cooperation, Altruism, and Individualism: Two Different Paths” of the 2nd SKKU International Conference “Why Collaborate Now” as a panelist along with Professor Peter Singer.
For Professor Jared Diamond’s keynote lecture, “Why are East Asian Societies more cooperative than European/American societies?”, she discusses under the topic “Uri: Beyond the Individualism-Communalism Duality.” Professor Park discusses the possibility of cooperating beyond the dichotomy of looking at the East and the West by dividing them into individualism and collectivism. Recently, Western media have diagnosed Korea as having a communitarian or even totalitarian tradition, citing Korea as a successful case of overcoming today's crisis. Such a diagnosis cannot be convincing when looking back at the past and present history of Korea, which has constantly resisted unjust governments. She suggests that an open self-identity that expands oneself while flexibly connecting with others, revealed in the analysis of “Uri,” a central concep in Korean thought, can be a good model for today’s collaboration.
