The International Society of East Asian Philosophy held its third conference on September 15 and 16. The international conference was entitled: Following The Brush: Defining Aesthetics Through East Asian Philosophy.
On the second day of the conference, Professor So Jeong Park, who heads the K-Academic Expansion Project (KAEP) and serves as the Director of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture (IKPC), gave a keynote speech entitled: “Acceptance of “Aesthetics” in East Asia and Its Philosophical Prospects”.
In sum, Professor Park’s speech explored the strong affinity East Asian intellectuals have for "aesthetics" as a field of study. Unlike its limited role in Western philosophy, aesthetics has been enthusiastically embraced in East Asia, with some universities in Japan and Korea maintaining dedicated departments for it. This affinity is rooted in the harmonious blend of rationality and sensibility in East Asian philosophy, offering a response to Western modern philosophy's challenges.
Professor Park also called for a reevaluation of East Asian aesthetic concepts beyond Western frameworks and conducted a comparative analysis of conceptual metaphors in Western and East Asian art discussions, demonstrating the persistence of East Asian aesthetic ideals into the modern era. Professor Park also used Contemporary Korean art examples to illustrate how East Asian aesthetic principles continue to influence today's artistic expressions.
