Texture Sensor


 

- OVER VIEW -

  Haptic information is very important for the human to identify surrounding environments. Recently, more and more applications require haptic information to be taken into consideration. Up to now, a number of efforts have been made to develop sensors that can fulfill the function of contact sensing like human fingertips. Signal analysis is to retrieve the surface conditions. 

 


Pen-type sensor for texture sensing


 

  Surface textures are important for identifications of objects. To reconstruction surface textures with high precision details, a pen-type tactile sensor is developed for texture sensing. It can measure the 3D contact force applied to its rigid sensing probe and send the results to a host computer. Based on the spatial information of the surface, a program can reconstruct the details of texture with data of several scans, which is an advantage over the traditional method based on surface profiling.

 


Texture Sensor with PVDF Flims


 

  The texture sensor contains 12 PVDF films, arranged in a 3x4 array form. The poling directions of the 4 PVDF films lied in the middle are perpendicular to the contact surface, while those of the other 8 films separated on both sides are parallel to the contact surface. The prime function of the PVDF films in to provide information about fine feature on contact surfaces. The aim of sensor signal analysis is to retrieve the surface conditions.
