Gait rehabilitation with interactive treadmill

Since Treadmill provides a safe, convenient, and fairly compact environ-ment to patients and clinicians, treadmill-based gait training has become an accepted rehabilitation method for improving the patients’ lower extremity coordinative skills. Based on this idea, we have developed a novel treadmill system, interactive treadmill. On the treadmill, users can naturally change their walking speed while the treadmill follows their intention of speed change. With the treadmill, patient’s better gait recovery is promising because the treadmill requires the user’s more conscious engagement that would result in large brain activation. We have also attempted to show the brain activation by using brain mapping techniques.
