[License News Reporter Kim Ji-hoon] The Samsung Future Technology Promotion Foundation and Samsung Electronics Future Technology Development Center announced 22 research projects for the second half of 2021 to be supported by the 'Samsung Future Technology Promotion Project' on the 11th.
A total of 34.07 billion won will be provided for research, including 17.27 billion won in 10 basic science fields, 9.2 billion won in 6 materials, and 7.6 billion won in 6 ICT fields.
The 'Samsung Future Technology Promotion Project' is a science and technology research support project for the public interest that Samsung Electronics has been implementing with 1.5 trillion won since 2013 with the goal of developing Korea's basic science and fostering world-class scientists and engineers.
First, a total of 10 projects were selected, including tasks that are expected to have ripple effects, such as pioneering new academic fields in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and life in the basic science field, or a fundamental approach to treating diseases.
Professor Taekyung Kim of the Department of Life Sciences at POSTECH challenges the study of 'memory', a familiar yet unknown area through the 'Tracking and Reconstruction of Memory Traces Based on Genome Action Potential'.
Professor Taekyung Kim discovers early expression genes that are expressed in different patterns according to the spatiotemporal arrangement of memory information through genomic analysis and combines them with a genomic regulatory region called an enhancer to develop a new genome-based neural activity detection technology. will be developed
Professor Kyung-Duk Park of the Department of Physics at the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) is conducting research that can control the movement of excitons (a state in which electrons and holes are bound together by electrical force to look like a single particle) in an area less than 1 nm3 (cubic nanometer). challenge As a study challenging the creation of a new nano-optical platform, it is expected that new physical phenomena can be observed in molecular physics and nano science.
Professor Kim Ik-soo of the Department of Microbiology at Gachon University plans to conduct research that records and traces all the various processes of cell differentiation. It is expected to provide a solution for treating various diseases, such as modifying the path through which cells deteriorate and metastasize to disease.
In the field of materials, six projects are supported in a wide range of research fields, such as therapeutics for genetic diseases and resolution of heat problems in electronic devices.
Professor Jin-guk Kim of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) challenges research that can cure rare diseases by discovering genes that can increase protein expression by binding to a specific region of mRNA (messenger RNA).
Professor Jong-Seok Lee of the Department of Physical and Optical Sciences at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) conducts research to understand and effectively remove the heat movement occurring at the nano-scale interface.
In the ICT field, six tasks were selected in areas for strengthening competitiveness of future industries such as next-generation communication and autonomous driving.
Professor Choong-Gil Heo of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Seoul National University plans to develop a technology that can quickly verify the safety of complex software systems. will be developed
Samsung Electronics has donated 1.5 trillion won since 2013 to support science and technology research that will lead the future of Korea in the fields of basic science, materials, and ICT.
The research funds supported so far, including this research project, are KRW 921.5 billion for 705 projects including 239 in basic science, 230 in materials, and 236 in ICT, and more than 13 thousand researchers have received support.
In the first and second half of each year, projects to be supported in the fields of basic science, materials, and ICT are selected, respectively, and through the 'designated theme project contest' held once a year, future technology fields essential to the nation are designated and supported for research.
For this year's designated theme research support projects, 12 were selected from a total of 6 fields including advanced AI, next-generation encryption system, B(Beyond) 5G&6G, robot, next-generation display, semiconductor device and process.
Researchers who received support from the Samsung Future Technology Promotion Project are also seeing successive achievements.
2,550 papers have been published in international journals, and in particular, 420 papers have been introduced in top international journals such as Science (10), Nature (7), and Cell (1). The number of papers published in the so-called three major journals is increasing year by year, with seven articles already published by September this year, following one in 2015, two in 2018, three in 2019, and five in 2020.
Recently, three papers related to life sciences, next-generation batteries, and artificial antibodies were published in international academic journals one after another, raising their global status.
A research team led by Professor Ahn Ji-hoon of Korea University succeeded in revealing the principle that plants control the flowering time in response to temperature changes, and the results were published in 'Science' in September. This is a study that will help us understand the impact of global warming on agricultural production.
Seoul National University Professor Jang-wook Choi's research team developed a technology that can significantly increase the usage time, a chronic problem of water-based zinc batteries, and announced it in 'Advanced Energy Materials' in September.
A research team led by Professor Jong-ho Kim of Hanyang University succeeded in developing an artificial antibody that can rapidly diagnose and treat bacterial infections, and the research results were selected as the cover paper of the 'Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS)', one of the best chemical journals in August.
Samsung Electronics' 'Let's go to the future! Under the CSR vision of 'Enabling People', we are conducting social contribution activities and win-win activities centered on youth education.
For youth education-focused activities, programs such as Samsung Youth SW Academy, Samsung Dream Class, Samsung Junior SW Academy, and Samsung Smart School are being operated to help young people reach their full potential.
In addition, through win-win programs such as Samsung Future Technology Promotion Project, Samsung Smart Factory Support Project, and C-Lab Outside, Samsung Electronics is sharing its technology and innovation know-how with our society.
