Title: The CCECC International Speaker Series - Emotions in Korean Philosophy and Religion
Lecuturer: Joseph Harroff & Jea Sophia Oh
Date: October 10th and 11th, 2023 (Wed) 15:00 - 17:00
Location: Sungkyunkwan University 600th Anniversary Hall, Room 10408
Purpose: This lecture series has been organized as a platform for international dialogue, aiming to deeply examine the meaning of "qing(情)" that has had a profound presence in Korean philosophy and culture for a long time, from various angles. It also seeks to discuss how it can provide insights and perspectives in today's society. This event is designed in line with an important goal of this center, which is to unearth valuable wisdom that relates to modern society as traditional Confucianism declines and to explore ways to critically analyze our current reality.
Achievements: By focusing on the problem of 'translation' of the vocabulary used in the important theoretical discussions in Korean philosophy known as "Sadan Chiljeong Nonjaeng," we were able to confirm the potential contributions of East Asian philosophy and Sinology studies to comparative philosophy. Furthermore, considering the diverse contexts in which the familiar term "qing(情)" is used in Korean culture, we explored the possibility of connecting it to more extended philosophical meanings and insights within the context of contemporary important issues. Through this, it became a meaningful conference that not only provides contemporary significance for traditional philosophical resources but also offers insights into the methodology for revealing them.
