Outcome: In this lecture, Dr. Jang Jin-won, author of The Golden Rice Plant Doesn’t Bow Its Head on Purpose (황금벼는 일부러 고개 숙이지 않는다), shared insights into how Koreans perceive humility, the meaning of humility in Eastern and Western classics, as well as related psychological and philosophical concepts and research findings. He highlighted the characteristics of misguided humility and explained both the potential drawbacks and benefits it can bring. Emphasizing the importance of cultivating “confident humility” in today’s society, he also introduced practical ways to nurture this kind of humility, such as Confucianism’s idea of “self-cultivation” and Taoism’s approach of “forgetting the self.”
