Greetings,
On February 10, 2026, an intensive workshop titled "Workshop : Selflessness and “No-self”: Borders of the East Asian Philosophy and Beyond" was held at the 600th Anniversary Hall, Sungkyunkwan University. Co-hosted by the SKKU Institute of Confucian Philosophy and Culture, this symposium served as a platform to examine and discuss various Eastern philosophical perspectives on the concept of "No-Self".
While Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism—the mainstream discourses of Eastern philosophy—have traditionally been understood as distinct intellectual traditions with different backgrounds, they offer a common ground for dialogue. Specifically, the Confucian 克己 (self-mastery), Taoist 忘我 (forgetting the self) and 心齋(fasting of the mind), and Buddhist 無我(no-self) all aim to transcend egocentrism or deconstruct the concept of the self, seeking a new practice or cognitive shift.
This workshop re-evaluated each school's discussion on the deconstruction of egocentrism and assessed the value of Eastern philosophical traditions as discursive resources for modern society. Through these efforts, "No-Self" became a site for reflecting on the issue of self-centeredness within universal ethical discourse and reconstructing its contemporary significance.
The symposium was successfully held thanks to the cooperation of the members of the SKKU Institute of Confucian Philosophy and Culture and the participating presenters. We hope this event serves as a significant stepping stone toward a new turning point in the study of Eastern philosophy.
