Title: The Research Methods of Contemporary Gyeonghak (the study of classics)
Date: May 27, 2022(9:00~17:30)
Format: Hybrid
Co-organized by: SKKU’s Institute of Confucian Philosophy and Culture, the Center for Contemporary Studies of East Asian Classics and Critical Confucianism (CCECC), and the National Research Foundation of Korea
The main research agenda of CCECC is to develop a theory of civic virtue relevant to contemporary Korean society, exploring the prominent ways in which we can respond to today’s urgent problems by referring to Confucian virtues. Standing at the starting point, we must carefully consider the 'methodology of Gyeonghak'. In spite of the thousands of years of the 'age of Gyeonghak', today's Gyeonghak is divided into various disciplines. Of course, we do not deny what the modern Gyeonghak has achieved, but we should ask ourselves how systematically "Gyeonghak" is preparing a way to explain our academic tradition in a more fruitful way, reflecting on us today, and presenting feasible alternatives. Accordingly, CCECC organized a conference under the theme of New Vision for Gyeonghak Research Methodology.
Achievement: This conference has become a place for examining the landscapes of today’s Gyeonghak research and various related disciplines and considering the perspective and methodology of Gyeonghak research that has been neglected. Through presentations by excellent scholars with various research interests including Chinese language, Confucianism, and the history of ideas, we were able to examine in depth how Gyeonghak was used, in different manners at different times, as an important source in explaining reality and pursing practical visions. This provided an invaluable insight as to establishing a modern method for Gyeonghak studies, which is an important part of CCECC’s research project.
