The Center for the Contemporary Study of East Asian Classics and Critical Confucianism (CCECC) at Sungkyunkwan University held an international conference under the title of “Confucianism and Meritocracy in the East Asian Context: Historical, Social, and Political” with the City University of Hong Kong’s Center for East Asian and Comparative Philosophy (CEACOP) as the co-organizer.
This conference was designed to explore the on-going discussions of meritocracy in Korea and China and to reflect on how the Confucian tradition can still be a useful philosophical resource. It also paid attention to the difference in the Korean and Chinese contexts concerning the recent debates on meritocracy.
Eleven researchers from the City University of Hong Kong, University of Hong Kong, Singapore Management University, Wesleyan University, San Francisco State University, TU Delft, Catholic University of Korea, Yonsei University, and SKKU presented and discussed their papers on the topic. During the two-days long conference, presenters had enthusiastic discussions on the topic, covering various aspects of the issue of meritocracy and contemplating on the relevancy of Confucianism. In addition, pre-registered participants from Hong Kong and Korea participated in the discussions vigorously, which was a great contribution to the conference.
