Dear Colleagues,
The Confucian Culture Research Institute at Sungkyunkwan University, in collaboration with the Center for Contemporary Studies of East Asian Classics and Critical Confucianism and the BK21 Four Research Group in Confucian, Eastern, and Korean Philosophy, is pleased to host a special lecture by an invited international scholar.
We are honored to welcome Professor Ranjoo Herr from the Department of Philosophy at Bentley University (USA) for a lecture titled:
“Why Confucianism is Not Care Ethics”
to be held on Friday, May 9, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
In this lecture, Professor Herr will critically examine the widely held view that Confucian ethics is essentially a form of care ethics. Since Chenyang Li’s 1994 proposal equating Confucianism with care ethics, this interpretation has gained significant influence, especially among feminist philosophers working within Confucian cultural contexts. Through a close analysis of care ethics and a careful critique of the Confucian care ethics position, Professor Herr argues that Confucian ethics should not be identified with care ethics and that Confucian feminism need not take the form of care ethics.
We warmly invite your interest and participation in what promises to be a thought-provoking session.
Thank you.
(※ Please note: The lecture will be delivered in English, and the Q&A session will be conducted in Korean.)
